Writers ‘get’ writers

This is my very favourite photo that sums up what it means to be an author. As wonderful as the feeling of finishing a draft, signing a contract, seeing your cover for the first time, or releasing your book baby into the world is, the best part is the people you meet and the friendships you form.

This photo was taken at my author friend Kylie Orr’s book launch for her debut novel ’Someone Else’s Child’ in 2022. It’s a candid shot, I’m not even sure who took it to be honest, and it's the moment we greeted Kylie on the night. It shows the absolute camaraderie and joy that you feel when one of your fiend’s celebrates a book moment. That’s Kylie Orr in the blue dress, Kirsty Dummin in the cream and black skirt and Kylie Hough to Kylie’s left (so my Ks!). The three of us met way back in 2017 at Fiona McIntosh’s Masterclass and immediately formed a friendship which has continued and flourished to this day. We’ve shared many ups and downs, celebrated each other’s successes and had a lot of fun along the way - even if we don’t catch up a lot in real life.  Kelly Rigby is in the green dress, her face exuding exactly what we were all feeling. We got to know Kelly through instagram and many of us have used her brilliant editing services and have become firm friends. And, of course, that’s me in the glasses feeling so happy for Kylie and so grateful to have found these strong, talented and supportive women.

Writing is about the people. The people who ‘get’ you and what writing means in your life. The people who help you achieve your goals. And the people who one day read your books.
